Burano Island

Burano is a small island in the Venice lagoon, known for its colorful houses, handmade lace and traditional fishing boats. The island is about 7 km from Venice and can be reached by boat.

The colorful houses of Burano are a characteristic feature of the island and are often referred to as the most “Instagram-friendly” island in Venice. Each house is painted a different color, and it is said that this tradition originated so that fishermen could recognize their houses from a great distance when returning from sea. The color selection of the houses is still regulated by the city government today to ensure a consistent aesthetic on the island.

Burano is also known for its handmade lace, which has been produced here for centuries. The art of lace-making has been known on the island since the 16th century and was practiced by fishermen’s and farmers’ wives to earn extra income. Today, lace making is still an important industry on the island and visitors can attend workshops to learn more about this traditional art form.

The island is also a popular destination for seafood lovers who visit the many restaurants specializing in fresh fish and seafood. It is also a great place to enjoy traditional Italian desserts, such as ‘bussolai’, small donut-shaped cookies.

As well as exploring the island’s picturesque streets and canals, visitors can also visit the Museo del Merletto, which is dedicated to the history and manufacture of lace. There is also a small museum dedicated to the history and culture of the island.

Overall, Burano is a beautiful place that is well worth a visit. The colorful houses, the handmade lace and the delicious seafood cuisine make it a unique experience in the Venice lagoon.
