Basilica Santa Maria della Salute

The Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute is one of the most famous churches in Venice and an important landmark of the city. The church was built in the 17th century and is located at the mouth of the Grand Canal in the Venetian lagoon. It was built in thanks for the end of a devastating plague epidemic that ravaged Venice.

The church is built in the shape of a Greek cross and has an imposing dome that is 40 meters high and crowned by a lantern. The interior of the church is richly decorated with frescoes and paintings, including works by Titian, Tintoretto and Paolo Veronese.

The façade of the church is particularly impressive and has two large bell towers decorated with statues. A wide staircase leads to the entrance hall of the church, which is decorated with marble and stucco work.

The Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute is also celebrated every year on November 21 with a procession in which the faithful make a pilgrimage to the church to express their gratitude for the end of the plague epidemic. During the celebrations, a bridge is built over the Grand Canal to connect the church with the San Marco district.
