The islands

Venice consists of more than 100 islands connected by a series of canals and bridges. Some of the most important and famous islands of Venice are:

  1. Murano: This island is famous for its glassblowing art and has been the center of Venetian glass production for centuries. Here you can admire the art of glass blowing in the many workshops and stores and also buy a variety of glass products.
  2. Burano: This island is known for its colorful houses and lace embroidery. Burano is also known for its fishing tradition and its culinary specialties, especially the Bussolà, a ring-shaped cookie.
  3. Torcello: The island of Torcello is one of the oldest settlements in the Venetian lagoon and is known for its ruins and the Byzantine Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the oldest churches in Venice.
  4. Lido: This island is known for its long sandy beach and is a popular destination for tourists and locals who want to swim and sunbathe. Lido is also the venue for the Venice International Film Festival.
  5. San Michele: This island is the cemetery of Venice and is home to the graves of many famous personalities from the worlds of art, literature and science, including Igor Stravinsky and Joseph Brodsky.
  6. Giudecca: This island is located south of the city center of Venice and offers a spectacular view of the city. Giudecca is known for its exclusive hotels and restaurants as well as its historic churches and palaces.
